Why Egyptian Tomato Paste

Why Source Tomato Paste from Egypt — Nile Delta Quality

Egypt harvests over 6.7 million tonnes of fresh tomatoes annually. The Nile Delta's fertile alluvial soil and long sun hours produce tomatoes with naturally high sugar content (high Brix raw material) and deep lycopene levels — the two qualities that determine paste colour and flavour intensity.

Egypt's processing season (June–September) delivers fresh-pack paste — not reconstituted from stored concentrate. This gives Egyptian paste a naturally deeper red colour and richer flavour vs European and Chinese alternatives stored over multiple seasons.

🌾

Tomatoes grown in the Nile Delta are processed within hours of harvest at our Minya Governorate facility — no cold storage between field and factory. This is what gives TOMEX paste its naturally deep colour and high Brix.

Egypt — The World's Most Competitive Tomato Paste Origin

Egypt is the world's 6th largest tomato producer, harvesting over 6.7 million tonnes annually. The Nile Delta — where TOMEX production is based — delivers tomatoes with a natural Brix of 5–7° in the raw fruit, significantly higher than European-grown varieties. This raw material advantage translates directly into a higher-yielding, deeper-coloured finished paste at every Brix level.

The Egyptian tomato paste processing season runs June through September — the peak of the Mediterranean summer. Fresh-pack processing means tomatoes move from field to evaporation plant within hours, not days. The result is a paste with higher lycopene retention, deeper natural colour (a-value 1.7–1.9), and a cleaner flavour profile compared to stored-crop competitors.

For ketchup manufacturers, sauce producers, and food distributors in Saudi Arabia, Libya, the UAE, Nigeria, Ghana, Poland, and Germany — Egyptian tomato paste from TOMEX delivers the same quality parameters as Italian and Spanish origins at 30–40% lower cost per tonne, with significantly shorter transit times to Gulf and African markets via the Suez Canal.

Egypt vs Italy vs China

Egyptian paste: comparable colour and quality to Italian at 30–40% lower FOB price. Shorter transit to Gulf & Africa than China (7–14 days vs 25–35 days). Lower freight cost per container on MENA routes.

🚢
Strategic Suez Canal Location

Alexandria and Port Said sit at the mouth of the Suez Canal. The world's most important shipping chokepoint is Egypt's logistics advantage — lowest transit times to every major market.

🎨
Deep Red Colour — Grade A 2.0/2.1

Our Grade A 36-38% Brix achieves overall colour 2.0/2.1 on the CIELAB scale — a deep, commercially rich red that delivers vibrant end-product colour in ketchup and sauces. Available in three a-value levels: 1.7, 1.8, and 1.9 to match your product spec.

What is the difference between Grade A (36-38%) and Grade B (28-30%)?

Grade A (36-38% Brix) is triple concentrated — higher solids per kilogram, stronger flavour, deeper colour (overall 2.0/2.1), and better cost-efficiency for manufacturers who dilute before use (ketchup, sauce production). Grade B (28-30% Brix) is double concentrated — the standard industrial grade, direct-use for food service, ready meals, and pizza sauce where no dilution is needed. Both have colour a-values of 1.7, 1.8, or 1.9 and Bostwick 4–8.5 cm/30s.

What is Brix and why does it matter?

Brix (°Bx) measures the percentage of total soluble solids — essentially the concentration level of tomato material in the paste. Higher Brix = more tomato per kilogram. For a manufacturer buying bulk paste to make ketchup, 36-38% Brix (Grade A) means you need significantly less paste per batch compared to 28-30% (Grade B) — directly reducing ingredient cost per unit of finished product. Egypt's Grade A is the cost-efficiency choice for large-volume users.

What is hot break (HB) tomato paste and when do I need it?

Hot break: tomatoes are heated rapidly (85–100°C) before pressing, which deactivates pectin-degrading enzymes. Natural pectin is preserved → thicker, more viscous paste → better body and texture in ketchup. Cold break: tomatoes are processed at lower temperature → brighter, fresher colour and flavour. When to choose HB: if you make ketchup and need maximum viscosity and a stable thick texture. When to choose CB (Grade A or B): if you need fresher colour and flavour for premium sauces or direct food service use.

What does the colour a-value mean (1.7 / 1.8 / 1.9)?

Tomato paste colour is measured using the CIELAB colorimetric system. The a-value measures red-green intensity — higher a-value = deeper, more saturated red. TOMEX paste is available at three a-value levels: 1.7 (standard red), 1.8 (rich red), and 1.9 (deep rich red — premium). The overall colour value combines a-value with other parameters: Grade A achieves 2.0/2.1 (premium), Grade B achieves 2.0. Specify your target in your RFQ — we can supply to exact colour grade.

What is the MOQ and can I order a trial before a full FCL?

Standard MOQ is 1 FCL (20-foot container) = approximately 18–20 MT depending on packaging format. For first-time buyers, we welcome trial orders at smaller quantities before committing to a full container — this is how most long-term buyer relationships begin. Contact us to discuss trial order arrangements. Free product samples (with full COA) are also available before any order commitment.

Can I get a free sample before ordering?

Yes. Free product samples with full COA, Halal Certificate, and product specifications are provided to serious B2B buyers before any order commitment. Samples dispatched within 5 business days. Note "sample request" and your preferred grade (A, B, or HB) and colour level (1.7/1.8/1.9) in your RFQ notes.

Why is Egyptian tomato paste cheaper than Italian or Spanish?

Egypt has significantly lower agricultural labour costs, land costs, energy costs, and processing costs compared to Italy and Spain. Egypt also benefits from government export support for agricultural products. The result: Egyptian tomato paste is typically 30–40% cheaper FOB than Italian equivalent at comparable quality and colour. Additionally, for Gulf and African buyers, Egypt's proximity via the Suez Canal means lower freight costs per container vs European origins.

How does payment work?

30% deposit to confirm your order — we start production immediately. 70% balance once your goods are loaded and ready to ship. For regular buyers with an order history, a Letter of Credit is also accepted. We do not offer payment on delivery for new buyers.

Which countries import the most Egyptian tomato paste?

Egypt's largest tomato paste export markets are Saudi Arabia (largest Gulf buyer), Libya (closest — 3–5 days by sea, 1–2 days by truck), Nigeria and Ghana (West Africa's fastest growing paste market — Nigeria alone imports $360M of paste annually), Poland (Egypt's fastest-growing EU destination — grew 6× in 4 years), and the UAE (major re-export hub for GCC). TOMEX ships to all these markets directly from Alexandria.

Is Egyptian tomato paste FSSC 22000 certified?

Yes. TOMEX tomato paste is produced at a facility certified to FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification 22000) — the most stringent international food safety standard, combining ISO 22000:2018 and ISO/TS 22002-1:2009. The facility also holds ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management) and Halal Certificate No. H1262017. Full certificate PDFs are provided with every price quote on request.

What is the shelf life of Egyptian tomato paste?

TOMEX Egyptian tomato paste has a shelf life of 24 months from the production date when stored at ambient temperature (below 25°C) away from direct sunlight. Aseptic bag-in-drum (200kg) format maintains product integrity for the full 24-month period without refrigeration. Tin cans and glass jars: 24 months unopened. Once opened, refrigerate and use within 5 days.

Can TOMEX supply tomato paste with a specific Bostwick reading?

Yes. Our standard range is 4–8.5 cm/30 seconds (Bostwick). Within this range, buyers can specify a target Bostwick reading — for example, ketchup manufacturers typically request 4–6 cm/30s (thick), while sauce and pizza manufacturers prefer 6–8.5 cm/30s (more pourable). State your target Bostwick in your request and we will confirm availability for your required grade.
